I have way more songs in my music library with "rain" or "rainbow" in the title than a normal person should. Like 150 or so.

Tuesday, November 12, 2013

Heh, I can't seem to stop playing the intro to “The Return Of The Giant Hogweed” by Genesis whenever I'm anywhere near a keyboard. Now I have to figure out what the hell the chords are after about the first minute and play this at Connie's Ric Rac open mic.

So overwhelmed with trying to figure out how to make up for lost time that I'm wasting even more of it. Way to go, brain.

Friday, November 8, 2013

Seriously wondering if I should blog about my selective eating disorder and how it's making me way more antisocial than I want to be. I don't know if I'm brave enough.

Late to the party observation #27,054: How I Met Your Mother season 2 was really really awesome.

Friday, November 1, 2013

Yeah, I get it, subconscious mind. Horrendously scary possibly poisonous mutant spider thing crawling around = comfort zone feeling threatened, blah blah blah.

Sunday, October 27, 2013

Which will come first, the Eagles ending this ridiculous home losing streak or Andy Reid saying, "I need to do a better job" for the first time with the Chiefs?

Wednesday, October 16, 2013

Proposed titles for a three song stretch on an album by Casey Brennan last night: "Beer Ghost", "Cool Beans" and "When I Was Born". Almost as good as the 'animal rights trilogy' of "Slaughtering A Chicken", "Pork Factory" and "Unleash The Hounds". Whether or not this stuff will ever get recorded is the question. :P

Steve Hackett Genesis Revisited show tonight!

Saturday, October 12, 2013

2.5 hours to play 6 innings of a 1-0 game in which there's a no hitter going on. Wow, Oh, it's cool. It's not like I have to get up before 6 or anything.

Some dorky stats from my "rate every day from 0 to 5" experiment so far (with a year average of 3.36):
MONTH AVERAGES:
January - 3.29; February - 3.44; March - 3.35; April - 3.49; May - 3.50; June - 3.39; July - 3.37; August - 3.13; September - 3.29.
DAY OF THE WEEK AVERAGES:
Sunday - 3.36; Monday - 3.36; Tuesday - 3.31; Wednesday - 3.39; Thursday - 3.29; Friday - 3.41; Saturday - 3.39.

Curious that Friday is the best day of the week for me this year considering it's actually more like my Tuesday as far as work goes. Maybe there's something to that Friday vibe anyway.

Dear Tampa Bay Rays / Baltimore Orioles / Cleveland Indians / whoever else: Do you guys *want* A-Roid playing in the playoffs? Please stop losing games and letting the Yankees back in it. Thanks.
Getting lines stuck in my head from shows I saw several months ago has been a common thing with me recently. "Siiiiiiiing with me nowwwww...." "Work and home again...." "We're all just monsters.... dressed up in clothes", etc. Good old recorder project. :)

TOTAL: Nick 1116, Casey 1088

It's $5.38 Day, which celebrates the totally ridiculous laugh from Albert the Random Middle of Nowhere Wawa Cashier that occurred 5 years ago today. That price is forever burned in my head - my recorder is awesome. :)

Ruben Amaro Jr. + Ryne Sandberg + Jonathan Papelbon = trouble. I think I'm jumping on the Pirates bandwagon now.

Sunday, July 28, 2013

That 6th inning might be the ugliest I've ever seen or heard on the radio. 8 runs, 2 hits, 3 errors... haha. The fact that anyone ever talked about this Phillies team as a playoff contender shows that baseball needs to get rid of stupid wild cards.

Thursday, July 25, 2013

I don't know if it'll turn into anything resembling a reboot of my old album review site, but I'm totally feeling inspired to write a feature where all my fictional characters take part in a roundtable discussion about the entire Magnetic Fields catalog, since they're a sufficiently obnoxious enough band. I'm fully expecting 69 Love Songs to be complete insanity from the perspective of my turbulent couple Eric and Amy.

Tuesday, July 23, 2013

Trying to get myself back into recording stuff for the first time in months. It would be nice to kill off that stupid "egotistical lead singer" personality in me that wants to be a one-man studio, because I don't quite have that talent.

Monday, July 22, 2013

Last night was definitely one for the dream dictionary, feeling like I was a passenger among totally average people on some sort of weird hybrid of an airplane flight, a space travel mission and an amusement park ride. What notably stood out was the takeoff and the pilot getting scared and aborting the first attempt at the flight. It almost felt like it took place in an alternate universe where limitations of how high up in the atmosphere you can actually go on this sort of ride didn't apply at all.

52 years old and writing "Insect Hospital", "Circular Karate Chop", "Stuff Is Way" and "Call You Mom". Never change, They Might Be Giants. :)
The lawn mowing vehicle in front of my workplace is in B flat major. *takes notes for Nark and Canen*

Tuesday, July 16, 2013

I need a good band name for my ambitious song cycle project, particularly one that would fit with the album titles like Sarcastic Satellite Radio, Mad Caves, Time Warp, I Am An Antisocial Person, Serious Business or Complicated Brain. It could be connected to either the number 6 or 12, various colors (damn you, Dear Hunter for taking The Color Spectrum), the fact that my recorder is a spy machine or how I'm such a procrastinator.

Monday, July 15, 2013

Still amused by one of many "music dork" moments I had hanging out with my friend Emily a couple days ago. I think it was her roommate that mentioned Alucard in conversation, and I immediately asked, "Gentle Giant??" instead of knowing it was referring to Castlevania or Dracula like I was supposed to, and not a King Crimson wannabe song on an underground progressive rock band's debut album from 43 years ago. Haha.
I just realized there's supposed to be a 19 minute track in the middle of The Knife's Shaking the Habitual album which my unfortunately bought at Best Buy copy does not have. Sure, from what I understand I'm not missing much, and the album seems really padded out as it is, but that really leaves my "Derek the OCD kid" side... unsettled.
I'm glad it doesn't happen often, because sleep paralysis is really scary. Feeling like I was hearing voices from outside and in the other room and not being able to move - I'm sure a relative of Gary Demon came up with that idea.

Friday, July 12, 2013

I'm suddenly having this desire to friend musicians / other lost acquaintances from open mics gone by that I have like 20-30 mutual friends in common with. Loretta Allen Syndrome, I think it's called.
Feeling the urge to work on my Amanda Palmer pastiche "I Wish I Could Hang Out With Jenny Lawson", my indie folk song "The Ballad Of Samuel Mudd", my 40's jazz old timey half step out of tune piano song "Incompetent Father", my stoner metal epic "The Vulture Works With Scissors" that stays on one D minor chord for 40 minutes, and like 146 other songs. Alas, I'm at work. :(
I'm in a very, very Dylan mindset right now. Well, the Physical Illusion variant who's not as much of a political guy or reader, anyway. My brain is just flowing with awesome stuff.

Wednesday, July 10, 2013

Ha, I always have my running joke of everything on my recorder being a time capsule for the 2052 kids, not knowing there was a book called 2052 about the future. Maybe I should have ordered this one on Amazon too.

Saturday, July 6, 2013

Bracing myself for some upcoming really intense mood swings / wildly varying day ratings. I feel like I can't sleep at all and want to just completely spill my mind out.

Friday, June 28, 2013

So I've been doing the open mic thing for 8 years now, and it's amazing to me how little I've actually engaged in actual music dork conversation with anyone I've met in this period. As horridly awkward as my late 90's/early 00's years were, I really miss how I could freely do that in AOL chat rooms, message boards, and among people in our old amateur album review site community. Why is it so hard for me to do now? I'm thinking this needs to change. I guess it's easier to be overwhelmed by how everyone sems a lot more normally social, how they have a lot more varied interests and substantial careers than I do, and how the bar/restaurant environment is exactly where I want to avoid people. Bad end of my mind, please shut up. Thanks.

Tuesday, June 4, 2013

This early June 2013 segment of my recorder project might turn into a mini audio documentary about Domonic Brown's ridiculous streak and everyone on sports radio freaking out over it. Recording audio of the 7th inning tonight and adding my Dan The Serious Businessman commentary to it is bringing the Phillies good luck at least.

Monday, June 3, 2013

You'd think The Procrastinators would be a band name that's taken already, but apparently not according to Rate Your Music. I'm guessing a lot of musicians meant to start a band with that name but put it off.

Saturday, May 25, 2013

Jimi Hendrix isn't actually dead - he just traveled 43 years into the future to play a show at Connie's Ric Rac tonight as Sunshine Rob in the band Sunshine Acid Tabs. Wow, you could seriously fool people into thinking these are lost songs of his. During the show, he was also playing guitar with his teeth and behind his back. They also closed with "Fire" and played riffs from the first two songs on Band Of Gypsys during soundcheck. In other words, not even trying to hide the influence.

Wednesday, May 15, 2013

Kurt Vile has totally been a spy at my shows with his "Was All Talk" song sounding like "If It Ain't Broke, It's Bound To Be Eventually Anyway" sped up with a drum machine. Down with you, acclaimed guy that sounds like a cross between Lou Reed and Wilco!

Friday, May 3, 2013

Ringo the 4th used for $99.99 at Princeton Record Exchange. Now there's a steal.

Thursday, May 2, 2013

I wonder who came up with Ticket Oak in the board room.

Thursday, April 18, 2013

Hello, I'm not even remotely close to being Johnny Cash.

Thursday, February 28, 2013

\Instead of "How's it going, Nick?", Facebook should ask, "What's the buzz? Tell me what's happening."

Thursday, February 14, 2013

I so wish Leonard would end up with Alex instead of Penny on Big Bang Theory. Grumble.

Wednesday, February 6, 2013

Surprisingly, recording myself yelling 'HEY, YOU HORRIBLE LAZY PERSON! GET OUT OF BED!' and using it as an alarm tone did not work.

Monday, February 4, 2013

The Ten Animal Food Chain would be an awesome name for a band.

Tuesday, January 15, 2013

I can't wait to play an almost 15 minute Nark And Canen epic about Amsterdam wearing a green mask on Friday night.
